Products with best before dates can still be consumed past their date, as there are no safety issues associated with the product. If the safety of the product was to be compromised, a use-by date would be used instead.

Product past its best before date may experience some quality deterioration over time. If the product has been kept as recommended and not exposed to elevated temperatures and humidity, quality deterioration is minimal. The product hence would be fine to consume. With Baking Powder, baking reactions may not be as pronounced as compared with product still within its shelf life.

Bi-Carb Soda is a white, odourless, crystalline solid. It is known under different household names mainly baking soda, sodium bi-carb or bi-carb. It liberates carbon dioxide when in contact with acid. It is commonly used as a raising agent in baking flour confectionery.

Baking powder is a mixture of baking soda, starch, and at least one slightly acidic compound such as cream of tartar that works as a leavening agent in baking by releasing carbon dioxide when mixed with a liquid, such as milk or water. Self-raising flour is plain flour mixed with baking powder so no more baking powder is required to be added to the recipe.

Both are used as raising agents, however are used under different conditions depending on the mix of other ingredients within the recipe.

You can actually use Baking Powder instead of Bi Carb soda but you will need more, and it can sometimes change the taste of the end product, however you cannot use Bi Carb Soda in place of Baking Powder.

Our gelatine powder is derived from beef and is Halal certified at the ingredient (manufacturer) level.

However, the finished product itself has not been Halal certified. While we do not add any ingredients after receiving the gelatine from our manufacturer, and no pork products are packed on the same line, our packing site does not currently hold Halal certification.

McKenzie’s Bi-Carb Soda does not contain any aluminium or aluminium based additives, nor is aluminium used in the processing of the sodium bicarbonate.

To test Baking Powder for freshness, pour 3 tablespoons of warm water into a small bowl. Add half a teaspoon of baking powder. Give it a light stir. The mixture should moderately fizz if the powder is fresh.

To test Bi-Carb Soda, pour 3 tablespoons of white distilled vinegar into a small bowl. Add half a teaspoon of Bi-Carb Soda. Give it a light stir. The mixture should rapidly bubble if the bi-carb soda is fresh.

If there is no reaction, that means the product might not work as intended.

Our baking powder is single acting.
